To provide access to the Copenhagen collection before the appearance of the standard type-index, Lunding lists 134 types, often giving access to published tales in Danish collections. "The c. 800 versions of tales in his (Grundtvig) Ms. collections are here reduced to 134 types"--p. 13. Special attention is paid to correlations with the Grimm collections. The system followed by was created by Svend Grundtvig and provides the classification for one part of the Dansk Folkemindesamling which is described in FFC 1. In this 9 page pamphlet Axel Olrik describes the National Collections of Folklore in Copenhagen and outlines the contents of Grundtvig's collection."

The lengthy introduction includes much material about the tales and the history of the study of them. For each version indexed, notes are given in five sections which give variations, bibliographic references and commentary. Appendices cover moral legends, origin legends, fifty-four unclassified tales and an alphabetical motif-index with references to types included in the main index. The bibliographies which conclude the work cover general works, followed by those dealing with popular tales in Sicily.

Analyzes 1,500 tales and is divided into three parts. The first presents raw, skeletal data of tales arranged in a broad relationship. It also assigns approximate Aarne-Thompson numbers and gives variant summaries of similar tales. The second part places the tales into the type-index. And the third lists tales which are independent of the international index. The work concludes with a list of tales from part one, but this section provides only approximate type numbers and a fifty-one item bibliography.

Originally was the author's dissertation at Basel. The motif catalog (pp. 82-198) is not a supplement to Thompson. Based on a search of about 1170 texts, which make up about 10% of the narrative literature, the list covers motifs for East Indonesian creation myths. The "main motifs" A, B, and C cover the creation process including actors, state of original condition of the earth and the formation of the primeval earth. The remaining categories D to K cover topics such as animals and plants, cultural goods and the end of mythological time. There are roughtly 80 categories. For each motif, references are given by geographic locale. The material is presented in summary fashion before the catalog. Maps outlining where the main motifs may be found conclude the book.

For most purposes the second edition should suffice, though the summaries of tale plots in the first are more detailed. Krzyzanowski's lengthy introduction notes that there are weaknesses in any classification system, particularly when Polish tales are included since they are tied so closely with those of Russia and White Russia. He suggests that Aarne did not leave enough room for Catholic and Orthodox-catholic tales as well as aitiological tales. Modifying Aarne's system, he notes that his work is just an initial attempt in classifiying the Polish corpus. Where a tale has a variant that is peculiarly Polish, he notes its distinctive features. Finally, he underlines the importantce of migratory legends which are also classfied here and complements Christiansen's index. Bibliography, pp. 26-46. English summary, volume 2, pp. 237-249 includes details on the arrangement of entries (p. 245).
