Look through the guide and try to really update it in PennPage. So, copy the things that look like they might still be useful, and then update books that have newer editions, and websites that don't work. Just make sure that you make a note of the things that you should check with Nick. Also, are there things about Philadelphia that should be added? Things you know about? Just amke sure someone can tell the difference between what you added and what you copied.

Our goals are to correct scientific misinformation in the media resulting from bad science, politics, or a simple lack of information or knowledge; and to act as a resource for journalists and policy makers on major scientific issues and controversies.

"This IBM utility aims ‘to “democratize” visualisation and to enable a new social kind of data analysis'. Many Eyes allows registered users to upload their own data on the understanding that the data is made available to all. It also has the facility to visualise numeric data in a spatial manner (using the proprietary mapping utility World Map). Users can view (or create) topic hubs which are pages devoted to a particular topic or theme. It serves as a way to collect related visualisations and data sets."

In Amnesty International published a report, EUR 46/022/2006, which detailed the alarming regularity of racist attacks and killings of foreigners and ethnic minorities, and the disturbing increase in their number. While there has been an increase in prosecutions recognizing racial hatred, the authorities are still not doing enough to convincingly challenge racist and xenophobic ideas and ideologies. This update details some of the most recent developments and reiterates Amnesty International's key recommendations for the Russian authorities in relation to racist attacks.

The article profiles author and television producer David Simon. Simon, a former reporter for the newspaper "The Baltimore Sun," created the television program "The Wire" about drug crimes in Baltimore. Convicted drug dealer Melvin Williams plays a role on the program. Simon comments how the program depicts the devaluation of people and how much of the program's content is inspired by real events. He describes his struggle to get the program aired on the cable network Home Box Office (HBO).

Philadelphia NIS NeighborhoodBas
NeighborhoodBase is a publicly-accessible, web-based, geographic data application developed by the University of Pennsylvania's Cartographic Modeling Lab. Along with parcelBase, muralBase, and crimeBase, neighborhoodBase is one of four applications that comprise the Neighborhood Information System. The neighborhoodBase website is designed to assist community-based planning and development organizations, government agencies, researchers and concerned individuals in their efforts to analyze, transform and revitalize Philadelphia neighborhoods.
The Philadelphia Neighborhoods Planning History Project creates a web presentation of the full content of 86 neighborhood planning surveys prepared and published by the Philadelphia City Planning Commission between 1946 and 1990. These reports contain descriptions of current conditions of housing stock; population trends; property turnover; public transportation; community activity. Recommendations are made for future action. The project will facilitate university and public research on Philadelphia's architectural and social environment by providing access to a body of material whose content is of current and future interest but whose printed format is ephemeral and subject to physical deterioration and loss. The reports are a primary resource for the study of how the problems and aspirations of Philadelphia neighborhoods were described during decades of debate about urban renewal in Philadelphia. School of Design faculty have affirmed the survey's continuing relevance to the curriculum of the school. At the same tiime, the initiative aligns with the University's stated commitment to Philadelphia as an urban environment.

This is an effort to bring together some resources -- images, documents, tools, and links -- for pursuing historical information about place in the five-county Philadelphia area: Bucks, Chester, Delaware. Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. The project has been building incrementally, as opportunities have permitted, since 1997. The overarching idea is to use new media to more effectively disseminate information about place, to enhance cross-institutional access to documentary materials of this sort, to better connect people with the history of their environment, and to thus enrich their lives here.

Same sex and unmarried partner household data are collected for those households where the householder and his or her partner are not married, but are living in a close personal relationship. An unmarried partner can be of the same sex or opposite sex of the householder.

An unmarried partner, in an unmarried partner household, is an adult who is unrelated to the householder, but shares living quarters and has a close personal relationship with the householder. This relationship is based on the self-identification of respondents.

The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) is an Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) product originally developed for the US Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) using DMA data. We used the DCW 1993 version at 1:1,000,000 scale. The DMA data sources are aeronautical charts, which emphasize landmarks important from flying altitudes. This explains why there is a separate aeronautical theme with all conceivable airports, yet why on some themes small islands and lakes are simply unnamed points. ESRI, in compiling the DCW, also eliminated some detail and made some assumptions for handling tiny polygons and edgematching. Also, note that the completeness of the thematic categories present in each layer will vary. Please read the layer descriptions (through links in the following table).

A few libraries are trying out social tagging: the University of Pennsylvania (UP) was one of the first library adopters with its PennTags (tags.library.upenn.edu/). The site allows UP students, faculty, and staff to bookmark quality Web sites and records in UP’s online catalog and share these resources with others. Additionally UP users can create and share “projects” or groups of links on a single site named for the topic.

PennTags is a site dedicated to academic tagging, but this technology can also be incorporated into an existing library Web presence. Stanford University is also experimenting with social tagging, in order to educate patrons about the library’s resources and to provide a platform for curators to identify quality external Web sites. Instead of a standalone tagging site, the open source content management software Drupal (drupal.org/) forms the base for Stanford’s Information Center site, which also includes wiki and blog modules. From there, the designers have added a del.icio.us module that allows users to find tags organized by subject.

"A work of art seems to be a hardier breed; it can be sold in the market and still emerge a work of art. But if it is true that in the essential commerce of art a gift is carried by the work from the artist to his audience, if I am right to say that where there is no gift there is no art, then it may be possible to destroy a work of art by converting it into a pure commodity. I don't maintain that art can't be bought and sold, but that the gift portion of the work places a constraint upon our merchandising."

This index was compiled from the original road records, docket books, jury decisions, and surveys held by the Philadelphia City Archives. From these sources the Philadelphia Department of Streets developed and maintains its comprehensive survey of official road records for the City. Changes to the names of certain streets, alleys, and courts were first effected by an ordinance dated September 1, 1858. A provision of this ordinance was an alphabetical index of former names, together with the location of the street and the new name given to it. By an ordinance of February 23, 1897 names of intermediate streets were indexed by old name, location and new name. Both indexes are held by the Philadelphia City Archives under Record Group 90.47.
A post describing the Google Books policy regarding government publications and the public domain. Arggh

Public assistance programs provide benefits only to those with too few resources to support themselves. Generally, such programs consider both assets and income in determining eligibility for benefits and payment amounts. The rationale for this approach is that the government should not have to support people who can take care of themselves by converting bank accounts, stock holdings, vehicles, or retirement accounts into cash or collateral. As such, assets are considered "means" that should allow families to avoid destitution. Assistance programs typically do not count assets below some low threshold, allowing families some savings or a car that may be necessary for work. However, families with assets above the threshold may be ineligible if they fail the so-called "asset tests" designed to target payments to those most in need.

Asset tests can create a disincentive to save among families who might subsequently qualify for benefits. Sometimes one additional dollar of assets can result in the loss of thousands of dollars per year in public assistance benefits. This raises the question: Do asset tests actually discourage savings and reduce asset accumulation among families who might qualify for public assistance benefits? At least one influential paper says yes. Hubbard, Skinner, and Zeldes, in their 1995 article, interpret the low levels of wealth accumulation among low-income households as a rational, utility-maximizing response to asset-based, means-tested welfare programs.

This brief describes current asset tests and discusses their role in reducing asset building by low-income families. We identify the target population subject to asset tests, describe the various asset tests, review background data and previous research, consider strategies for meeting a mix of objectives, and point to the need for additional research and policy analysis.

This policy brief describes the steps that both the federal government and state governments can take to reduce an important barrier to retirement saving among low-income families: the asset tests in means-tested benefit programs.  A growing body of evidence suggests that low-income families will contribute to retirement accounts if they are presented with effective and transparent incentives to do so and have easy access to a savings vehicle.  The asset tests associated with means-tested benefit programs, however, often penalize those who do save, undermining the broader goal of encouraging retirement saving.  Furthermore, the rules applied under these tests to retirement accounts are confusing and often treat 401(k) accounts and IRAs in a seemingly arbitrary manner.

This paper examines whether AFDC/TANF asset tests affect the asset holdings of low-educated
single mothers, exploiting variation in asset limits and exemptions across states and over time.
There are important reasons to examine vehicle assets in this context. For example, vehicles
make up a very significant share of total wealth for poor families, and the variation in vehicle
exemptions over time and across states far exceeds the variation in asset limits. Consistent with
other recent research, I find little evidence that asset limits have an effect on the amount of
liquid assets that single mothers hold. However, I find evidence that vehicle exemptions do
have an important effect on vehicle assets. The findings suggest that moving from a $1500
vehicle exemption to a full vehicle exemption increases the probability of owning a car by 20
percentage points for low-educated single mothers relative to a comparison group. Also, the
results indicate that single mothers are not substituting vehicle equity for liquid assets in
response to more relaxed restrictions on vehicles.

"Any text that has infiltrated the common mind to the extent of Gone With the Wind or Lolita or Ulysses inexorably joins the language of culture. A map-turned-to-landscape, it has moved to a place beyond enclosure or control. The authors and their heirs should consider the subsequent parodies, refractions, quotations, and revisions an honor, or at least the price of a rare success."

Under the guidance of founder Ellen Stewart, La Mama has played a seminal part in fostering Off-Off- Broadway theatre, nuturing and encouraging such important Theatre artists as Tom O'Horgan, Lanford Wilson, Sam Shepard, Philip Glass, Joseph Chaiken, Andrei Serban and Liz Swados. The documentary features exerpts of some of the 18 plays which were revived at the theatre for its anniversay season; These distinguished works include Paul Foster's Hurrah for the Bridge and Leonard Melfi's Birdbath both directed by Tom O'Horgan; Jean Claude Van Italie's Motel directed by Michael Kahn; and Lanford Wilson's production of his own play Rimers of Eldritch. The interviews in the program include recollections by Ellen Stewart and La Mama alumni Paul Foster, Tom O'Horgan, Leonard Melfi, Lanford Wilson, Philip Glass, Joseph Chaiken, Harvey Fierstein and many others.

My favorite extension. Lightweight, fast and flexible - it allows to query web services by context menu of the browser. Queries may contain various parameters of currently browsing web page: selected text, URL, host etc. Be sure to look at the library labs page for search plugins to add to conquery.

Lists major releases of historical census data online for the country, states, cities, metro areas, etc. Very useful starting point for historical census questions.
This report looks at these questions from the point-of-view of college students and 14- to 17-year-olds. In the original study, we found that college students are more aware of and use libraries’ information resources more than other survey respondents. In addition, the more educated the respondents, the more they continue to use libraries after graduation. Awareness does not always translate into high usage.

Overall, respondents have positive, if outdated, views of the “Library.” Younger respondents—teenagers and young adults—do not express positive associations as frequently. These findings, and more, are valuable insights for anyone seeking to know more about the library usage and perceptions of college students and young people.

This guide will help you to use the Penn Library when researching topics on the modern ethnography, history and political situation of Iraq and its people. It describes finding aids, useful reference works, and some web portals for discovering information on Iraq.
Materials containing relevant information are collected chiefly by Van Pelt Library (social sciences and humanities, including history and political science, and area studies, including Middle Eastern studies). The anthropology, ethnography, and archaeology collections of the University Museum Library will also contain useful materials.
BE PERSISTENT! Many terms for topics you'll be researching will have been transliterated into romanized forms. You'll soon discover that there's no one "approved" transliteration style. When searching, first try using the form you know. Look for clues -- controlled vocabulary (e.g., subject headings or uniform titles) that may appear only in full record displays, "see also" or "more info" references -- to discover the transliterated form used by the work you're consulting. Use truncated word forms: read the work's documentation to discover how to truncate. Try omitting punctuation-like characters: some computer interfaces may elide ayn, maddah, and other Arabic transliteration marks. Ask for help! Your instructors have great experience at wrestling with transliteration, and so do reference librarians.
