This guide is designed for use during the Firefox Workshop.
Look through the guide and try to really update it in PennPage. So, copy the things that look like they might still be useful, and then update books that have newer editions, and websites that don't work. Just make sure that you make a note of the things that you should check with Nick. Also, are there things about Philadelphia that should be added? Things you know about? Just amke sure someone can tell the difference between what you added and what you copied.

The article focuses on the partnership between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), local shareholders and the University of Washington in Seattle for the school-based nutrition intervention program Eat Better, Feel Better. One of its goals is to increase community awareness of the benefits of healthy eating. It was built on resources from the university, community and schools to address the problems of program evaluation. Students at the intervention school chose vegetables during lunch.

The article profiles author and television producer David Simon. Simon, a former reporter for the newspaper "The Baltimore Sun," created the television program "The Wire" about drug crimes in Baltimore. Convicted drug dealer Melvin Williams plays a role on the program. Simon comments how the program depicts the devaluation of people and how much of the program's content is inspired by real events. He describes his struggle to get the program aired on the cable network Home Box Office (HBO).

Statistical series for more than 40 economic and social indicators coveringun 1900-2000 for twenty Latin American cotries.
Annual public opinion survey conducted in 17 Latin American countries, 1995 to present. No data sets are provided at this web site.
Same sex and unmarried partner household data are collected for those households where the householder and his or her partner are not married, but are living in a close personal relationship. An unmarried partner can be of the same sex or opposite sex of the householder.
An unmarried partner, in an unmarried partner household, is an adult who is unrelated to the householder, but shares living quarters and has a close personal relationship with the householder. This relationship is based on the self-identification of respondents.
Here are some sources for your use:
- The American FactFinder contains two sources:
- American Community Survey Table B11009, shows "Unmarried Partner Households by Sex of Partner."
- Census 2000, Summary File (SF) 1 Table PCT14, "Unmarried Partner Households by Sex of Partner" is available for the nation, state, metropolitan statistical area, city/place, county, and various other geographies.
- Additionally, same-sex unmarried partner household data were collected in the 1990 Census. The Technical Note on Same-Sex Unmarried Partner Data From the 1990 and 2000 Censuses provides guidance on comparing these data.
- The Census 2000 special reports include:
- Population and Housing Table, PHC-T-19, Hispanic Origin and Race of Coupled Households provides race and gender for unmarried partner households for the U.S.
- The Census Bureau also collects data for same sex and unmarried partner households in ongoing survey programs, but does not regularly produce tabulations on this topic. For more information and special studies on the subjects of same gender couples and unmarried partner households based on the Census Bureau's survey programs, visit the Population Division Working Papers:

PennTags is a site dedicated to academic tagging, but this technology can also be incorporated into an existing library Web presence. Stanford University is also experimenting with social tagging, in order to educate patrons about the library’s resources and to provide a platform for curators to identify quality external Web sites. Instead of a standalone tagging site, the open source content management software Drupal (drupal.org/) forms the base for Stanford’s Information Center site, which also includes wiki and blog modules. From there, the designers have added a del.icio.us module that allows users to find tags organized by subject.

Public assistance programs provide benefits only to those with too few resources to support themselves. Generally, such programs consider both assets and income in determining eligibility for benefits and payment amounts. The rationale for this approach is that the government should not have to support people who can take care of themselves by converting bank accounts, stock holdings, vehicles, or retirement accounts into cash or collateral. As such, assets are considered "means" that should allow families to avoid destitution. Assistance programs typically do not count assets below some low threshold, allowing families some savings or a car that may be necessary for work. However, families with assets above the threshold may be ineligible if they fail the so-called "asset tests" designed to target payments to those most in need.
Asset tests can create a disincentive to save among families who might subsequently qualify for benefits. Sometimes one additional dollar of assets can result in the loss of thousands of dollars per year in public assistance benefits. This raises the question: Do asset tests actually discourage savings and reduce asset accumulation among families who might qualify for public assistance benefits? At least one influential paper says yes. Hubbard, Skinner, and Zeldes, in their 1995 article, interpret the low levels of wealth accumulation among low-income households as a rational, utility-maximizing response to asset-based, means-tested welfare programs.
This brief describes current asset tests and discusses their role in reducing asset building by low-income families. We identify the target population subject to asset tests, describe the various asset tests, review background data and previous research, consider strategies for meeting a mix of objectives, and point to the need for additional research and policy analysis.
single mothers, exploiting variation in asset limits and exemptions across states and over time.
There are important reasons to examine vehicle assets in this context. For example, vehicles
make up a very significant share of total wealth for poor families, and the variation in vehicle
exemptions over time and across states far exceeds the variation in asset limits. Consistent with
other recent research, I find little evidence that asset limits have an effect on the amount of
liquid assets that single mothers hold. However, I find evidence that vehicle exemptions do
have an important effect on vehicle assets. The findings suggest that moving from a $1500
vehicle exemption to a full vehicle exemption increases the probability of owning a car by 20
percentage points for low-educated single mothers relative to a comparison group. Also, the
results indicate that single mothers are not substituting vehicle equity for liquid assets in
response to more relaxed restrictions on vehicles.

A great Harper's article on the relationship of authorship to creation. Highlights:
"Any text that has infiltrated the common mind to the extent of Gone With the Wind or Lolita or Ulysses inexorably joins the language of culture. A map-turned-to-landscape, it has moved to a place beyond enclosure or control. The authors and their heirs should consider the subsequent parodies, refractions, quotations, and revisions an honor, or at least the price of a rare success."
I've long thought that a reasonable plan.

Overall, respondents have positive, if outdated, views of the “Library.” Younger respondents—teenagers and young adults—do not express positive associations as frequently. These findings, and more, are valuable insights for anyone seeking to know more about the library usage and perceptions of college students and young people.
Materials containing relevant information are collected chiefly by Van Pelt Library (social sciences and humanities, including history and political science, and area studies, including Middle Eastern studies). The anthropology, ethnography, and archaeology collections of the University Museum Library will also contain useful materials.
BE PERSISTENT! Many terms for topics you'll be researching will have been transliterated into romanized forms. You'll soon discover that there's no one "approved" transliteration style. When searching, first try using the form you know. Look for clues -- controlled vocabulary (e.g., subject headings or uniform titles) that may appear only in full record displays, "see also" or "more info" references -- to discover the transliterated form used by the work you're consulting. Use truncated word forms: read the work's documentation to discover how to truncate. Try omitting punctuation-like characters: some computer interfaces may elide ayn, maddah, and other Arabic transliteration marks. Ask for help! Your instructors have great experience at wrestling with transliteration, and so do reference librarians.
