Open Book Alliance

Mission

The mass digitization of books promises to bring tremendous value to consumers, libraries, scholars, and students. The Open Book Alliance will work to advance and protect this promise. And, by protecting it, we will assert that any mass book digitization and publishing effort be open and competitive. The process of achieving this promise must be undertaken in the open, grounded in sound public policy and mindful of the need to promote long-term benefits for consumers rather than isolated commercial interests.

The Open Book Alliance will counter Google, the Association of American Publishers and the Authors' Guild's scheme to monopolize the access, distribution and pricing of the largest digital database of books in the world. To this end, we will promote fair and flexible solutions aimed at achieving a more robust and open system.

Assembly such as this : a novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy, gentleman / Pamela Aidan.

Aidan, Pamela. . Assembly such as this : a novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy, gentleman / Pamela Aidan. 1st Touchstone ed. 0743291344 (pbk.) series New York : Simon & Schuster, 2006.
Call#: Van Pelt Library PS3601.I33 A94 2006

This is a re-telling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice from Mr. Darcy's viewpoint. Interesting, but disappointing. This is the first of a trilogy, and apparently the author plans to take three books to tell a story that Austen handled in one.

A Guide for the Perplexed: Libraries & the Google Library Project Settlement (Nov. 13, '08)

Washington DC-The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the American Library Association (ALA) have released "A Guide for the Perplexed: Libraries and the Google Library Project Settlement," by Jonathan Band, JD.

The guide is designed to help the library community better understand the terms and conditions of the recent settlement agreement between Google, the Authors Guild, and the Association of American Publishers concerning Google's scanning of copyrighted works. Band notes that the settlement is extremely complex and presents significant challenges and opportunities to libraries. The guide outlines and simplifies the settlement's provisions, with special emphasis on the provisions that apply directly to libraries.

Beyond The godfather : Italian American writers on the real Italian American experience / A. Kenneth Ciongoli and Jay Parini, editors.

Beyond The godfather : Italian American writers on the real Italian American experience / A. Kenneth Ciongoli and Jay Parini, editors.

[0874518458 (alk. paper)] Hanover, NH : University Press of New England, c1997.
Call#: Van Pelt Library PS153.I8 B49 1997

Beyond The Godfather, Italian American Writers Writing about the Real Italian American experience is a collection of stories from various Italian authors who offer an intimate and unique insight into what there lives were like completely disconnected from the experiences depticted in a movie like “The Godfather”. This work is not so mucha response to the film “The Godfather” as it is a reaction to those that have seen the film and can not distinguish between reality and fiction or are simply content to place stereotypical

The first story in the book is that of Louise Desalvo called “Finding My Way” and his experiences as a young boy growing up in Hoboken, New Jersey and going to grammar school. This interesting little story shows how important education was this Italian American family and the pride that they felt to become integrated into American society as opposed to the extra legal activities that you would experience in “The Godfather.” Moreover, his real-life experiences at school prove him to be quite astute and polite. This quaint story ends as it had began ground in the real experience of family, one that has no connection to the mafia.

This book takes a step back from the stereotypes that one might decide to adopt from the portrayals of Italian Americans in The Godfather. Understanding the distinction is important not only because stereotyping a group of people is ignorant, but because in realizing that the book or the movie are a work of fiction should increase one’s appreciation of the work.

Godfather : the intimate Francis Ford Coppola / Gene D. Phillips ; with a foreword by Walter Murch.

Phillips, Gene D. .Godfather : the intimate Francis Ford Coppola / Gene D. Phillips ; with a foreword by Walter Murch. [0813123046 (alk. paper) ] Lexington, Ky. : University Press of Kentucky, c2004.
Call#: Van Pelt Library PN1998.3.C67 P48 2004

In chapter 4 (In a savage land: The Godfather) of the book Godfather: The intimate Francis Ford Coppola, Gene D. Phillips helps recount the process that Francis Ford Coppola went through in order to make the movie, The Godfather. Through this chapter we learn of the trials and tribulations that he faced before, during and after the making of the movie.

Phillips reports that the screenplay was first met with skepticism from Paramount as previous mobster films failed in the box office. However, based on current events such as Senator Etes Kefauver’s Committee on Organized Crime and the publicity of Mafiosi Frank Costello, Paramount decided to take a chance on its production.

Francis Ford Coppola was chosen to direct The Godfather due to his Italian ancestry. Paramount wanted an Italian American director because they wanted to make the film as realistic as possible, and only an Italian American could convey the subtleties of the culture. Although initially opposed to producing the screenplay, Coppola became enamored with the storyline that was based on the unity and strength of the family.

Throughout the production Coppola battled with others in order for his vision to be expressed. First, money was an issue with Paramount as Coppola’s budget was small. During the filming his ideas would conflict with others in regards to the cinematography and editing of the film. After the film was finished, he received criticism for glorifying organized crime and celebrating violence.

Despite all of these problems, Coppola’s persistence helped create a film that became highly acclaimed. Through his passion and attention to detail, he was able to create a magnificent movie, which went on to become one of the most successful films of all time. Based the time period and current events surrounding the film, The Godfather was able to capture the imagination of everyone.

YBP Annual Book Price Update

"Each fall YBP publishes a report on price and output for new books published during our prior fiscal year. The data encompasses all new titles treated on the Approval Plan programs of YBP and of Lindsay & Croft, YBP's division in the United Kingdom, two offices which regularly profile, with book-in-hand, well over 65,000 distinct new titles annually. Since our Approval Plan programs are expressly designed to serve academic libraries, our data, which we have reported in a consistent way for over a dozen years, is a useful index to English-language publishing trends for scholarly, professional, and scientific books."
