"My Sakai" makes it possible to get your files and announcements, and keep track of what's going on in your Sakai sites, straight from your desktop. For example, a student engrossed in writing an essay, who suddenly realises they need to check something in a document in their course site, can open it straight from their desktop widget, without having to break off and navigate through Sakai to find it.

"My Sakai" widgets show you recent activity on all of the worksites you're a member of. This means that the widget will tell you when a new announcement or a new resource has been added. The widgets also provide synoptic views of Resources and Announcements.

We have created widgets for Mac DashBoard, Vista Sidebar, Facebook, iGoogle, Google Desktop, and RSS.

The future of content hosting in sakai.  Argues for more robust implementation to be the face of the DLA, DSpace, and the image store

From the website:

There is currently a beta quality JCR implementation of Content Hosting in trunk. This work was originaly done and documented in SAK-10366. This is some good historical information available too, but that is now deprecated. This page will deal specifically with JCR information related to the ContentHostingService and parts of the Resources tool. For general information about JSR-170 support in Sakai see here

The very first phase of JCR integration for Resources is an implementation of the existing ContentHostingService API using a JCR backend. With this initial support, the Resources Tool and Sakai DAV are meant to operate as they stand with no changes to their code.

Follow developments of open source administrative systems like SRS or ILS for libraries.
Indiana University Libraries Information Technology is working on a pilot experiment to develop a user interface for accessing digital library resources from within the Sakai course management environment. Titled “Twin Peaks” to illustrate the currently separate mountains of library and course management resources being bridged, it is a fully JSR168 compliant tool being developed as an experimental option within the new WYSIWYG authoring tool of Sakai. Currently available resources are limited so the effort as is centered on foundational aspects of user interface and integration into Sakai. The goal is to provide a system to make it easier for instructors with limited time and very limited technical expertise to simply locate and reuse digital content, in the widest sense of such content (licensed, local, any media, etc). This tool encompasses several practical functions for teaching and learning like reading lists, creation of guided searches, and course or subject specific web pages. The functionality is targeted for eventual acceptance as a default tool within the core Sakai code.

The structure of the modern organization resembles the flexible, interlinked web of a fishnet.  Unlike the rigid industrial-era  "pyramid" structure,  a "fishnet organization" is characterized by blurred company boundaries and borders.  Electronic information systems enable parts of the whole organization to communicate directly with each other, whereas the hierarchy wouldn't otherwise permit it (Davis, 1987).  The result is that the new organization is able to deal with changing roles, attitudes, expectations and cultures at a moments notice.

Pachyderm 2.0 is currently in release as a server-hosted, browser-based authoring platform running on servers provided by the New Media Consortium to its membership. The server versions of Pachyderm 2.0, which are being built for Windows, Linux, and OS X servers, will be freely available for download from SourceForge in the first quarter of 2006 when Pachyderm is released in open-source. The availability of the server package downloads will be announced broadly at that time.
Maybe, says Jerry Sternin, the problem isn't with the outside experts or with the company. "The traditional model for social and organizational change doesn't work," says Sternin, 62. "It never has. You can't bring permanent solutions in from outside." Maybe the problem is with the whole model for how change can actually happen. Maybe the problem is that you can't import change from the outside in. Instead, you have to find small, successful but "deviant" practices that are already working in the organization and amplify them. Maybe, just maybe, the answer is already alive in the organization -- and change comes when you find it.

Course Management Systems for Learning: Beyond Accidental Pedagogy is a comprehensive overview of standards, practices and possibilities of course management systems in higher education. Course Management Systems for Learning: Beyond Accidental Pedagogy focuses on what the current knowledge is (in best practices, research, standards and implementations) and the history of the CMS, while also discussing innovative practices in CMS instructional design that have been informed by learning theory and intentional pedagogy. The last section of this book is an invited section, where vendors (WebCT, OKI, Angel) and innovators address their vision of the tools, practices and possibilities in a true next generation. Course Management Systems for Learning: Beyond Accidental Pedagogy represents the points-of-view of a variety of stakeholders and allows each to write in the style and language that is relevant to their field, making this an incredibly useful tool for practitioners, developers, administrators, faculty members, and students.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
